Jackson, named after Andrew Jackson, is the capital and the largest city in the state of Mississippi. The Metro Jackson area is home to more than 425,000 people. Today, the city of Jackson is steeped in history, music, performing arts and sports. The city has styled itself as "The Best of the New South," and "The Bold, New City."

During the Civil War, Jackson was a strategic manufacturing and railroad center for the Confederacy. In 1863 Union troops burned and looted nearly the entire city of Jackson.Today, there are few antebellum structures left standing in Jackson. The Governor's Mansion, the Old Capitol building and Jackson City Hall are three important surviving antebellum structures.
